Some problems with using special "groups" instead of just making every hashtag a "group" (ie: OStatus-enabled/followable hashtags):

    1) Usually introduces special new microsyntax
    2) Can cause data duplication (if someone wants something to be tagged and also go to a group)
    3) Can be an excuse to not implement followable hashtags (even thouh those are really useful by themselves)

I do agree that groups are awkward. They are part of the ostatus spec, though, so at least the gem should properly support them.

I do like the idea of making hashtags groups, and no other way of doing it, though. I do agree that the whole !whatever syntax is kinda awkward.

Sure, this is a part of the OStatus spec that was a bit poorly done, since really groups are just users that repeat whatever you Salmon to them, but whatever.

+1 to implementing groups at the protocol level but making them indistinguishable from hashtags in the UI.
