create a dev vm

I don't know about yinz, but I setting up a development environment can be a time-consuming task daunting enough to dissuade potential contributors. Especially so when mongodb enters the picture.
Could someone spin up a development environment VM? Maybe an Ubuntu image with all the server software pre-installed?
I know @steveklabnik is a vagrant fan for OSX developers.
